About Me
These days mainly photograph the heritage scene but still retain an interest in the modern world.
I once freelanced for the 'Flight collection', an aviation stock library but following the sale of the library that market has gone, digitising film from those files slowly.
I'm a member of the Great Central Railway here in the UK and have a pass that allows lineside access, I have now volenteered at the railway and i am in training to become one of the 'meeters and greeters 'for the Bronze driver experiances courses.

Big soft spot for North American railways having visited Canada three times and fell in love with their system.
Also a member of The East Midlands Railway Photographic Society which has pioneered Diesel photo charters on heritage lines, I just wish the same thing could cross over to the world of aviation as well.
Would love to do some road runs with vintage trucks & busses
I am also available for commercial & press work, please contact me via ianloasby@talktalk.net to discuss your requirements,
and you will note all my work here is available as prints via the Fotopic 'print shop' , just press the buy print butten underneath all of the pictures to order a print of your favorite shot.

5th Feb 2010Some more from my 'Flight Collection' film archive, a visit to a naval flying display at Shuttleworth, nr Bedford (45 images) New
What a fabulous sunday afternoon this was, unfortunatly the date is not recorded, but it was in my pre digital days, where i used both a Minolta 35mm film camera and a Maymia 6 x 4.5 film camera to capture these shots.
they have been scanned at home on my flat bed scanner.

Commercial prints can be taken from the original transparency, please contact me for details and loan.
    Conditions will apply.
30th Jan 201031:206 @ Rushton Historical Tspt museum Northamptonshire (20 images) New
The first venture out for the EMRPS of 2010, this charter was rearranged due to the extreemly cold weather we experianced at the beggining of Jan 10. Many many thanks to the museum for providing a warm mess room and the hot coffee as it was still very cold .
Our subject for this evenings shoot was railfreight grey liveried 31:206 on a rake of engineers waggons and also a small TPO set.
I found this charter 'challenging' to say the least due to , and some reason I can't fathom out, my Sony struggled with the exposures, mayde it was the mix of ambient light and our tungsted lights, but I owe alot to photoshop!! just hope it does not spoil your visit.
30th Dec 2009A few from Stanstead & Luton airports (28 images)
The flight collection where short on 'exterior' shots of both Stanstead and Luton, so having no work with the trucking agency I jumped in the car and went down to both airports.
I have taken out all the work that I feel would not interest many of you and have just published the aircrat shots.
In this collection there is a mixture of both scanned 35mm and 6x4.5 slides.
If you want to make commercail prints please contact me and the original slide can be made available.
    Terms and conditions apply.
27th Dec 2009Some more Flight Collection work, this time featuring Birmingham airport (15 images)
Just a small selection of shots in this collection, but it contains one of my best paying shots, the Emirates A330 arriving in bad weather and also some night shots, of aircraft on the stands.

If you require commercial standard prints please ask me to make the original slide available.
    Terms and conditions apply.
24th Dec 2009East Midlands Airport, Castle Donnington Leicestershire, scanned 35mm and 6 x 4.5 archive once on file with the 'Flight Collection' photographic library. (57 images)
Here are some more scans of archive material that was once submitted to the 'Flight Collection'
The slides date from the late 90's to when I went digital about 6 yrs ago.

If you are a commercial viewer the original slides can be sent out for top quality printing, please contact me for details.
    12th Dec 2009EMRPS Night shoot at Swannick, featuring, 20:048, 25:321 D182, 45's:108 & 133, 47:401 and D1048 Western Lady. (53 images)
On saturday 12-12-09 the EMRPS held a night shoot at Swannick at the Midland Railway Centre. The ain of the evening was to recreate shed scenes from the Midland & Western re3gions from those era's. Using the centre'sresident diesel fleet, i think you will see we did a grand job of just that, onlt a incident beond our controll stopped us from geting the final shot , that was the Western by the box, hopefuly this will be put right soon.
23rd Nov 2009MainLine Odds and Sods (5 images)
Just like the same galleries in both steam and preserved diesels this collection is for the miscellaneous shots we all collect, the one offs, just as we where passing this turned up sort of shot.
27th Oct 2009Semaphores, signals, sunshine, sunsets, siluhuoettes sixties, 66's signal boxes, point work, Must be Barnatby in NE Lincolnshire. (59 images)
Led by the the wishes of Greg McDonnell, Steve Bradley, and Jim A Brown my, Canadian friends, Barnetby was a place of pilgramage for them after seeing some ones slide show on the net.

Barnetby is a wonder, on a jct of 3 routes the traffic comes out of Immingham and then splits 3 ways at Barnetby west jct. The whole area is controled by semaphore signals from two signal boxes (towers)
I used both my camera bodies here , the Sony A100 and Minolta Dynax 7d hence the slight out of sequence way the shots are displayed, the sony ones being first.
Date of shots is late afternoon early evening of monday 19-10-10 and up to about 1300hrs the next day when we lost the sun and set sail for the Ribblehead staion inn and the glories of the S & C
There are shots from 2 other close locations included here, New barnetby crossing & Brocklesby jct.
21st Oct 20093 Locations from the Settle-Carlisle line, Blea moor, Dent & Garsdale (42 images)
This was my last day with Jim Greg and steve.
We'd travelled up the previous day after loosing the light at barnetby and had pre booked the Ribblehead station Inn, getting there first led me to grabbing the rooom with a view .....sraight over the viaduct.
Next morning was overcast but it did not rain, a small mercy.
Who ever said the S & C was quite for freight needs to come and sit line side again, althoufg not quite hellish busy it ticks over very nicely with ample time to move locations but still catch the varied traffic. The motive power was exclusivly green and red 66, but i'm still kicking my self for not having a camera handy when the DRS weedkiller train camre over the viaduct hortly after i arrived.
    11th Oct 2009Great Central Railway , Loughborough , Leicestershire Sunday 11th October 2009 (52 images)
What adjectives could you use to describe what must have been the best ever steam gala in the railways history, stupendous, brilliant, supurb, amazing, incredible, astonashing out of this world, none, as no words can descibe just how good it was.
With 7 engines in steam and an intensive service, hadly more than a 20 minute gap between trains, a mixed goods, windcutter, and TPO interdispersed between passenger services this gala was brilliant. many months of hard dedicated work must have gone into the planning of the event and then the hardest job of all, making it work is just immence, please would the staff and volenteers of the GCR stand up, take a bow and accept the applause of the public who you amazed, sometimes saying a simple thank you seems inadequate, but thank you.

I hope my pictures do your hard work justice.

25th Sep 2009The Seven Valley Steam Gala Friday 25th September 2009 (77 images)
At last! got to the Svr's steam gala and spent all day , well nearly all day there.
This event is unique in the heritage railway calender as it runs throughout friday and saturday nights giving the chance of some night photography on a working steam railway.
I started my visit on a murky Erdington bank then made my way south along the line, ending up at Arley as I lost daylight and moved into nightime mode before going down to Kidderminster then driving back up to Hampton Loade and Bridgenrth before calling a day at aprox 0200hrs then driving back home to Derby geting into bed at around 0345hrs.
But it was worth it, I am a fan of B/W photography and as the light dipped I took the oportunity to do some b/w shooting, the results are to the second part of this collection but well worth the effort to go and have a look
22nd Sep 2009'North Yorks Moors Railway' diesel gala ,sat 19th sept 2009 (35 images)
On the way home from a holiday in the Yorkshire dales I called in at the NYMR to catch the action on the railways diesel gala.
I do not know the line so I'm very grateful for the tip that took me to 'Moorgates', what a cracking location, loco's featured are 26011 from BH, D6700, 37:901, 55:022, due to a points failure the western's turn was cancelled, always the same as I was waiting in rasping light at Moorgates, DOH!
    11th Sep 2009Friday 11th September 2009 GCR Diesel gala (46 images)
Due to a holiday I could only come down on the friday , but it was well worth it, a Deltic, 2 x 47's, a 50 of all things, making a first for the class on the railway, a 37, resident Peak, The NRM's crompton push pulling with the 4Big set.

And full sun all day, we where blessed
10th Sep 2009Around Toton Yard, Sandiacre Nottingham (33 images)
Toton yard is now a shadow of its former size and importance since the coal mine closures of the 1980's, but it is still the HQ of DB Schenker and creates alot of passing traffic through the yard and to / from the yard. Its well worth a visit and has numerous vantage points from which to view the action
31st Aug 2009Traffic on the West coast Mainline (WCML) (24 images)
Traffic photographed on this very busy route is extremly diverse from Virgins VHF (very high frequency) passenger services with the 125mph + Pendolinos, to the various freight operations using both electric and diesel traction
20th Aug 2009Steam -odds and sods (13 images)
This collection is the equivalant steam collection to what i've started on the diesels. it will contain the odd few shots of loco's when photing was n't the main reason for being out and about.
15th Aug 2009MISC Diesels at the Midland Railway Centre, Swannick Derbyshire (19 images)
Just a few on a quick fly through recce for latter in the year.
    8th Aug 2009Gcr's HM Forces Veterans Weekend,Saturday 8th August 2009 (39 images)
The GC is to be congratulated on holding this weekend, as an ex member of HM forces its nice to get some reconition for some of the work we did , albeit some would argue contraversially, but as servicemen we swore allegiance to the crown not polititions.
Thanks again and i hope it can grow and grow into an annual event.
    3rd Aug 2009Kemble 2009 (27 images)
My visit on the saturday of this years show can only be described as a washout.
I took a few shots of Monty's Allsorts Dog Agility club and of the Huskies but not wanting to take inferior pictures came home, a 250 mile round trip, heyho there's always next year and the back catologue i've got published for you to browse and buy pictures from.

see you next year in the dry we hope, Ian.
2nd Aug 2009Manchester Airport Aviation Viewing Park Thursday 30th July 2009 (22 images)
Just a few from a trip to the AVP , highlight was the Saudi 747-400 frieghter, I was suprised with the lack foreign visitors, must be a sign of the times.
27th Jul 2009The Great Central Railways ( Loughborough) 'Mails on the Rails July 2009 weekend (62 images)
This years weekend was not as blessed with the weather as in previous years but that did not dampen a great weekend, and in true GC stylethings where not as you'd expect, both the TPO and windcutters sts where out hauled alternatly by different steam and Diesel power, for me the stars had to be the 25 & 27 working double headed, but theni'll not complain about the Fairbourne tank on the TPO's
19th Jul 2009Kemble Bone Yard, Kemble Airfield Gloucestershire (7 images)
First of what will probally become many shots of aircraft being broken up at Kemble airfield.
All these shots where taken from the main A429 which runs past the enterance to the airfield and the perimeter fence, I used a 135-400mm lens to capture these shots.
30th Jun 2009Manchester Airport, a mid summers afternoon to evening visit 24th June 2009 (131 images)
Took the opportunity to have a late stay at the AVP, arriving at approx 15:30 and leaving at 20:45, to take advantage of some brilliant light that the last few evenings have given us, the more you look through the collection the better the light gets.
Aircraft highlight was the first visit of Air France EMB 195 F- HBLG.
25th Jun 2009Portsmouth Harbour, Naval Dock Yard and the Historic Dock Yard. (92 images)
This gallery consists of two trips to Portsmouth, the first on rather grey overcast day took in a harbour boat tour to look at the Navel vessels at anchor in the dockyard.
HMS darling was the star attraction the Royal Navy's newest type45 destoyer not yet commisioned, (she was on thursday 23rd July 2009)
Just prior to her commisioning she was open top the public to have a limited look on board, this being something I'd never done befor returned, the shots you'll find are the one with the ellusive sun on them, i caught the sun for a few hours early on the saturday.
HMS Ark royal was the aircraft carrier berthed behind HMS Darling
19th Jun 2009Two Cruise ships and a Regal Liner at Calshot, Southampton Water, Hampshire (22 images)
Following on from the afternoon at Portsmouth , the next afternoon found me at Calshot at the head of the Solent where the old Sunderland flying boat base was, to photograph 2 cruise ships and a liner,Quen Mary 2 departing Southampton at 17:00hrs. the Red Arrows put in an appearance, not for QM2 although many would have believed so but for the revllers on the Isle of wight music festival, I have caught the Red Arrows directly over head QM 2 as she rounded the island, other traffic both pleasure and merchant marine was also photographed from this brilliant vantage point.
9th Jun 2009Some Classic Aircraft and misc from the Kemble vehicle ralley, Kemble Gloucestershire (40 images)
A bit of a mishmash really this collection but well worth a browse for the nature of the subject matter. These shoots a Kemble started when someone within the hierachy of the shows organising committe said he fancied doing something different.......he has created a monster so with the help of the people at the show when it gets dark (on the saturday of the show) we play, I keep telling him that the AN2 will have to be done at night so whatch this space after this years August show.
If you want to join in with the fun please contact me and i will tell you how.
4th Jun 2009Manchester Aviation Viewing Park, Manchester airport Monday 1st June 2009 (136 images)
My first trip up to the avp in quite a while, interest had wained but with this trip the smell of aviation fuel has got to me again so it wil not be the last!
All shots shown here where taken from the avp between approx 1045 through to 1600hrs, with a sigma 135-400mm lens (x 1.6 for the diggy conversion), the sun was harsh for most of the day which has caused me quite a bit of grief in Photo-shop but i think i've brought you quite a far few good uns!.
25th May 2009Preserved Diesels, odds and sods collection from around the UK (43 images)
You know what its like, you are out with the wife and all of a sudden you come across a railway with something really juicy running and as she loves ya you are allowed to leap out and crack a couple of shots off, well thats what this collection is all about, the one off's, the just fell over such and such, you get the drift.
I can see that this collection will grow as time goes bye.
4th May 2009The first jet Air Force 1 (1 images)
outside the museum of flight, Seattle Washington state a few sobbering days after sept 11th 2001.
    4th May 2009Southend Airport Summer 2001 (34 images)
Carrining on digitising my 'Flight collection' work here are some scanned 6 x 4.5 slides all shot on Fugi Scalia for the agency on an airside visit to southend airport. I was also allowed in the heavy maintainence hanger and photographed a B737 that was privatly owned by a middle east gentleman who from memory was proud as punch of his aircraft.
28th Apr 2009Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire Spring Diesel Gala sunday 26th April 2009 (48 images)
What a day, brilliant traction but not weather wise really a game of russian rulette with the sun but some extreemly pleasing results where captured

    19th Apr 2009'EMA', Sunday evening 19th April 2009 (15 images)
After a while my interest in the world of aviation has returned and there is no better way than to capture a AN124 on finals and taxing at EMA along with a couple of the usual residents.
    5th Apr 2009Barrow hill's steam Gala (Chesterfield, Derbyshire) sunday 5th April 2009 featuring an A1 -A2 2 x A4's and a supporting cast. (87 images)
Barrow Hill at its best a LNER line up featuring Tornado-Blue Peter- Union of south africa & Sir Nigel Griesley along with K1 Lord of the isles , the GcR's 04 all feature in this incredible line up.

I was unfortunatly not able to attend the photo-charter held on the friday but went on the sunday and was rewarded with somre cracking weather and shots.
29th Mar 2009Some shots of the Irish fleet at rest in Killybeck Co. Sligo (19 images)
Some porttraits of the Irish fishing fleet a rest as i pst through killybeck on a recent trip to Ireland
11th Mar 2009Traffic on the Burton- on-Trent to Birmingham mainline (108 images)
This collection is intended to show the varied traffic that uses this busy NE - SW route.
    25th Feb 2009Guelph Junction Railway (49 images)
This is a short line operating over a 19mile line from Guelph Jct with Canadian Pacific's Galt sub to the city of Guelph, the operations are operated by Ontario Southern Railway.

On the day of my visit we had typical english weather, damp, overcast and cold rather than the bright sunny very cold days that where to follow.

The loco's featured on this railway are 2 x RS23's no's 504 & 505. they are known as ALCO's after the manufactorer the American Locomotive Company and are rated at 1000hp much like our class 20's in the UK . I am told that these loco's are a rarity these days as only a handful still remain active on the Canadian network. The budd cars on site are not stored but have been de-engined and are used as passeger stock by the railway.

These two examples where built under licence at the MLW (montreal loco works). The loco's have a top speed, of 75mph although they are only operated at 25mph here on the GJR.
17th Feb 2009The Port Colborne Harbour Railway (The Trillium Railway), Ontario, Canada (72 images)
This was my last day on my weeks folly across the atlantic and what a day it was. Thanks must go to the railways Vice President for allowing me to visit and ride the train, Thanks again Mr Wilson.

This railway for UK viewers is throw back in time and offers some absolute stunning industrial vista's long lost from our system.

The loco featured is Oct 1944 built ALCO S-2 7024, a rarity in its own right, please take some time to truely savour this railway and also may I add that its a working railway providing a much valued service to its customers and is a big sucsess story.

13th Feb 2009The Orangeville -Brampton Railway, Ontario Canada (50 images)
This is a 'shortline' operation over 36.7 miles of the old Canadian National Owen Sound sub.

The Orangeville and Bramptom is operated by a sub leasing company called 'Cando' who operate railways in various parts of Canada, and imported the loco featured here from their operation on the Athabasca Northern Railway in western Canada. the loco was originally owned by Canadian National Railway and has recieved many modifacations which include a cut down nose to aid driver visability.

The loco is a GP9 rated at 1800hp and has a top speed of 65mph but does not do that on the OBR, built in 1957 she was rebuilt in 1982.

On the day I visited the railway chemicals where delivered to a windscreen washer manufactorer and plastic pellets collected and delivered to a plastics company at Orangeville.

I rode the train and also followed by car and stopped and took pictures in locations suggested to me by the driver (engineer), who is an ex Air Canada 767 pilot! and one hell of a character.
At one point he sugested that, as I got all swaddled up in scarves jackets hats and gloves to leave the loco to take a picture, I, if I was a canadian I would not need them as it was a positivley a late spring day outside....yeah.....check out the pictures!!
but Steve you are a star and thanks again.

Please enjoy the pictures and if you want some more imfo get back to mr .

This gallery contains various Canadian Pacific and Canadian National freight trains and also Via Rail and GO Transit passenger trains from around the greater Toronto area. One highlight for me was catching on of the VIA Montreal-Toronto passenger services using the old star stock ( channel tunnel passenger stock sold to bombardier)

You will find shots in snow to rain, full sun to overcast such was the diversaty of the Canadian weather!

The VSOE hauled by 67008 heads south on the low level to end up at London Victoria. Note Toton does not normally see passenger workings as its a freight line but does see the occasional excursion and steam hauled specials.09=09-09
